On March 12, 2025, the Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI) Regency Fisheries Service from South Sumatra Province visited the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries (RIIFE) and the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD office. They were received by Mr. Rezki Antoni, the Head of BRPPUPP, along with staff members from SEAFDEC/IFRDMD. During the visit, Ms. Resty Amalia, a representative from the office, outlined the purpose of their visit: to coordinate and consult on the planning for the establishment of a marine reserve in the district.
Dr. Dina Muthmainnah provided an overview of the successful process from planning to the establishment of conservation and monitoring activities conducted by SEAFDEC. Additionally, Mr. Aroef Hukmanan Rais gave a presentation on SPEECTRA, an initiative for inland water fisheries conservation in South Sumatra Province.
PALI fisheries service officers expressed their gratitude for the insights gained during the visit and committed to consulting with various stakeholders in order to move forward with establishing the reserve. It is hoped that this initiative will lead to the recovery and sustainable management of several fish species that were once common in these waters.
