Over the past several decades, Geo-Informatics Technologies such as Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) were utilized as a tool to apply for many aspects in fisheries and environmental sciences which can help the regional fisheries development and management. These technologies can notably provide good media to effectively disseminate information and coordinate and improve core activities carried out by the regional fisheries organizations. As such, a regional fisheries information system is considered to be useful for fisheries planning and management, supporting the sustainable use of fisheries resources in the Southeast Asian region.
To further support and encourage the SEAFDEC Member Countries (MCs) on the utilization of FGIS and RS for the sustainable use of the fisheries resources in the region, the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) developed a project entitled “Sustainable Utilization of Fisheries Resources and Resources Enhancement in Southeast Asia”, including the activity on the “Utilization of Fisheries Geographic Information System (FGIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) to Improve Fisheries Management in Southeast Asia” which is implemented during the year 2020 to 2024.
The project activity commenced with organizing the “Regional Consultation Workshop on the Utilization of FGIS and RS to Improve Fisheries Management in Southeast Asia” aiming to provide a platform for National Focal Points of the project participating countries to discuss and prioritize training activities through the year 2021-2023.
Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries was represented by Dr. Khairul Amri, from Research Institute for Marine Fisheries. Meanwhile SEAFDEC/IFRDMD was represented by Ms. Dian Pamularsih Anggraeni.
This event was held on August 20th, 2020, by using Google Meeting application. It was organized to update country studies or research on the utilization of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in fisheries and environmental science, and also to establish the network of FGIS and RS researchers in the region.
