On December 13, 2024, the Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) introduced the Special Area for Conservation and Refugia (SPEECTRA) to Dr. Mina Hori from Kochi University. Dr. Hori was accompanied by the Deputy Chief of IFRDMD, Mr. Toru Shimoda, and the staff of IFRDMD. The SPEECTRA site is in Patra Tani Village, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province.
SPEECTRA is a collaborative effort between the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and SEAFDEC/IFRDMD. The concept focuses on the conservation of swamp fish species through pond modeling. This innovative approach aims to facilitate the return of small fish to the nearby rivers, enriching the fish stock and contributing to the livelihoods of local fishers who depend on these water bodies.
By implementing this conservation model, IFRDMD seeks to promote sustainable fisheries practices and support the well-being of inland fishers. Introducing SPEECTRA to Dr. Hori underscores the importance of international collaboration and knowledge exchange in advancing inland fisheries conservation.
