On 10 September 2024, the Employees’ Wives Association of the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, held an event to commemorate International Literacy Day, which is celebrated every 8 September. The event was held at Rumah Tahfidz Pinggiran Silaberanti Tsa Lihah. One of the highlights was a captivating storytelling event about eels by IFRDMD staff. Twenty-three girls and 14 boys were enthralled as they learned about the eel’s fascinating journey from the deep sea to the highlands of the lake.
Moreover, the introduction of eel fish was not just about encouraging children to love eating fish, but also about making them aware of the health benefits. The children were informed that eels are a nutritious fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are crucial for brain and nerve development, and vitamin A that maintains eye health. This knowledge will surely help them make healthier food choices in the future.
On that occasion, IFRDMD also distributed magazines and comics to foster interest in reading from an early age.
