The Chief of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, Dr. Arif Wibowo, participated as invited speakers in the Global Swimways Webinar Marathon, which was hosted by the World Fish Migration Foundation on May 14th, 2020. This event was a part of the World Fish Migration Day celebration on May 16th. The webinar was held to celebrate the significance of ensuring rivers free-flowing. In this webinar the leaders, on this concerned study, were given the opportunity to tell attendees about worldwide swimway, the current status of the fish species population, and trends of capture fisheries. During the seminar, Dr. Arif presented the “Introduction of Inland Fisheries in Indonesia.” He delivered the studies of freshwater fish biodiversities done by the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia. He also addressed the challenges to ensure sustainable inland fisheries among many pressures.
Managing Director of World Fish Migration, Dr. Arjan Berkhuysen welcomed the participants to the Webinar. Moreover, he delivered the general introduction of the World Fish Migration Foundation Activities. This Webinar was participated by 59 participants from the researchers, academia, fisheries officers, NGO, and stakeholders of fisheries and irrigation from Oceania, Eastern Asia, Central, and South Asia, Western Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Central America, and North America. The Webinar took 22 hours, and it was divided into nine sessions. These webinar sessions were designed to accommodate attendees from different time zones and continents.
The World Fish Migration Day is celebrated every other year to raise global attention to the need for restored river connections for migrating fish to achieve healthier fish stocks and more productive rivers. It was first celebrated in 2014. Due to Covid-19 issues, the fourth celebration in 2020 will be postponed until October 24th 2020.
