Workshop Participants Visit SEAFDEC/IFRDMD Office in Jakabaring, Palembang, Indonesia
As part of the Decade Achievements of IFRDMD: Workshop on Best Practices in Inland Fisheries Management to Optimize Well-being, held from October 23-24, 2024, participants had the opportunity to visit the SEAFDEC/IFRDMD Office in Jakabaring, Palembang, on October 24. The visit offered an immersive experience of the decade-long work of SEAFDEC/IFRDMD in advancing inland fisheries management and included a series of engaging activities and exhibits.
Participants began their tour at the SEAFDEC corner, a dedicated space showcasing information about SEAFDEC and IFRDMD. This interactive area served as a friendly discussion spot where visitors could explore the organization’s history, achievements, and vision while enjoying a photo booth to capture memories of the visit.
The tour continued with a showcase of fishing gear collected over the past 10 years, reflecting the evolving techniques and tools in the region’s inland fisheries. Participants then viewed a rare collection of preserved fish species belonging to the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension, with specimens dating back to 1969, underscoring the rich biodiversity of Indonesia’s inland waters and the importance of preserving these records for future generations.
The group also visited the genetics and DNA laboratory, where they learned about ongoing research efforts to enhance fish breeding and conservation through genetic studies.
After an insightful morning, participants gathered in the Ondara Hall for a lively lunch accompanied by karaoke, fostering a fun, informal atmosphere to celebrate the workshop’s success and connect with colleagues from across the region.
Following the office visit, participants were given free time to explore the city of Palembang, where they enjoyed sightseeing and shopping, rounding off their experience with a taste of local culture and hospitality.
