Overview and Perspective of Anguillid Eels Fishery in Southeast Asia
Abstract
Anguillid eel has a complex life history especially during their journeys between marine and freshwater environments. They are exploited from juvenile to adult life stages. At this point, the present substantial challenges in relation to conservation, management, and policy development should be paid attention to. This book: Overview and Perspective of Anguillid Eels Fishery in Southeast Asia, gives a synthesis of the understanding based on the experiences gained from the research study by SEAFDEC/IFRDMD, as well as the management and policy development by each country in Southeast Asia. What should be underlined is the need to improve the system of collecting data and information on eels fishery in the Southeast Asian region, especially in major eel producing countries. Specifically, the collection of data and statistics on Anguillid eels should be done at the species level for the purpose of conducting stock assessment of certain species of eels.
