IFRDMD Visit to the Fisheries Office of Musi Banyuasin Regency
On 4 September 2024, IFRDMD visited the Fisheries Office of Musi Banyuasin Regency and was welcomed by the Head of the Fishery Office, Mr. Hendra Tris Tomy, to report on the activities carried out the day before during the Focus Group Discussion with the fishers. The event continued with a discussion led by the acting secretary of the office. The participants were 15 males and 19 females, including the Head of fish resources, the Head of fishery product processing, the Head of aquaculture, and fishery extension officers, as well as SEAFDEC/IFRDMD staff. This activity served as a form of coordination with the Department, as it is the extension arm directly connected to fishing communities in the field.
The discussion brought to light the pressing challenges in collecting inland fisheries production data. The absence of fish landing sites and the difficulty in gathering data on fisheries actors, particularly fishers, are significant hurdles due to their occupation needing to be accurately listed on their identity cards. These challenges underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive and accurate data collection system for inland fisheries.
In light of these challenges, it is clear that establishing a comprehensive and accurate data collection system for inland fisheries is crucial. Such a system would allow for better identification of fishers and other stakeholders, ensuring that resources, training, and assistance are allocated effectively. Building this data infrastructure will support more informed decision-making and enhance the sustainability and productivity of inland fisheries in Musi Banyuasin Regency and beyond.
