On December 23, 2024, SEAFDEC/IFRDMD and the Research Institute for Inland Fisheries and Extension (RIIFE) visited the Marine Science Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu. The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Indra Cahyadinata, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and Mr. Zamdial, Head of the Marine Science Study Program, as well as a team of lecturers.

During the visit, the discussion opened on exploring the potential of eels in Bengkulu, a region rich in aquatic biodiversity. Discussions highlighted eels’ ecological and economic importance, recognizing them as a valuable resource for both local livelihoods and the global market. Participants shared insights into current challenges and opportunities, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices to safeguard these fisheries for future generations.

Besides, the discussion touched on the development of conservation strategies to protect eel habitats, prevent overfishing, and establish a sustainable management framework. For that, collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives, such as training programs for students and local communities aimed at integrating scientific knowledge with traditional practices, are needed. The collaborative efforts are expected to advance sustainable fisheries management in Bengkulu.
