The survey team from IFRDMD continued the first survey in 2023 to Poso of Central Sulawesi and Palabuhan Ratu of West Java from February 23 to 28, 2023. The activity entitled Development of Stock Assessment Methods and Strengthening Management Measures for Anguillid Eel Resources is part of one of the projects budgeted by the JAIF for the Eel Project.
The field survey in Poso of Central Sulawesi aimed to obtain catch data on glass eels in the Poso River estuary, and on elver and yellow eels in Pandiri River and around Poso River estuary. While in Palabuhan Ratu of West Java, the activity aimed to obtain catch data on glass eels in the Cimandiri River estuary and on elver and yellow eels in Cikaso River. The glass eel fishing survey was carried out at night, while elver and yellow eel fishing activities were conducted during the day.
The catch data were obtained from fishing gear installed in the water at several points. The results of Anguillid Eel production data were collected every month from enumerators.
In addition to collecting catch and production data, the survey team also measured environmental conditions through physical-chemical water parameters. Besides, the team discussed the fishing activities and eel production with the fishers at the beginning of this year.
The IFRDMD team had a chance to visit the eel processing home industry in Palu City. The team and the owner discussed the development of production and the problems faced by the owner and several similar business actors in the production process of their products.
