The CITES International Technical Workshop on the Anguilla spp. held on 18-20 April 2018 in Kew Botanical Garden London by CITES Secretariat, EUROPOL, Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS), European Commission, the representative of CITES Management and Scientific Authority from ASEAN Member States, namely 1 Indonesia, 1 Malaysia, and 2 Viet Nam including 2 from SEAFDEC Secretariat (Dr. Somboon Siriraksophon and Mr. Isao Koya), and 1 from IFRDMD (Ms. Ni Komang Suryati) participated to the workshop. The workshop objective and agenda were introduced by CITES secretariat, followed by the presentation by European commission, CMS on the On-going international initiatives on European eel, operation Lake by EUROPOL and Border Force National CITES Team. Consequently, the progress report from study 1 on European eel, illegal trade in European eel and tackling environmental crime and glass eel trafficking in the morning session. In the afternoon session, SEAFDEC introduced the tropical anguillid eels, while representative from Dominican Republic and Japan presented on American eel (A. rostrata) and Japanese eel management (A. japonica), respectively. Finally, The CITES consultant presented the result of the questioner survey. The 2nd and 3rd day of the workshop were group discussions in which aimed to come-up the recommendations from three groups/topics as followed: 1) listing of European eel; 2) Illegal trade of European eel; and 3) non CITES-listed Anguilla spp. (including American eel, Japanese eel, and tropical anguillid eels in Southeast Asia).
